WoW Private Server Shutdowns 2025–2026: What's Left

If you stepped away from the private server scene for a year, here's what you missed: most of it is gone.

September 2025 — Everlook closes its EU branch after a reported legal threat. In the months that follow, Project Epoch — a project that had drawn 25,000 players — is shut down. May 2026 — Stormforge goes dark, and the very next day Turtle WoW, eight years old with seven to nine thousand players online at peak, follows it offline. Four major homes gone in well under a year, and tens of thousands of players suddenly without one.

It's the biggest story in Vanilla WoW this decade, and it deserves an honest telling — including the parts that aren't comfortable for a private server to say.

The legal part, honestly

Blizzard owns Warcraft. The courts have agreed with them every time it mattered. However much a server felt like a home to the people in it, the law saw unlicensed infrastructure, and the law won. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

So no — we won't stand here and call it theft. What we will say is that the legal ledger and the human one don't balance. What the filings called infrastructure, the players called their living room. Guilds that had raided together for years, friendships with a decade of shared evenings in them, characters that were diaries — all of it switched off in an afternoon.

What a lawsuit can't shut down

Here's the pattern worth noticing: servers have fallen before, and the players regrouped every time. The desire these projects answer — a free, honest, non-predatory way to live in this old world — didn't ship with any one server, and it doesn't die with one. You can delete infrastructure. You can't delete the reason people keep rebuilding it.

The official alternative exists, and for many people it's the right answer. But it comes with a subscription, and since October 2025, with the WoW Token — official gold for real money. If that's precisely what you were escaping, "just play Classic" isn't an answer; it's the question restated.

Is Stonetavern immune? No. Nobody is.

We're a private server. The same weather that reached Turtle can reach us, and we won't insult you with a promise nobody on earth can make.

What we can promise is everything actually within our control:

What to ask any server now — including us

If the purge taught the community anything, it's the right questions to ask before you unpack your bags:

Ask those questions everywhere. Ask them about us, to our faces. The fastest way is the [Discord](https://discord.gg/aAfsM8Q5Sp) — the regulars have no script, and you'll get a straight answer to the hard questions too.
