How to install WoW addons on Stonetavern

Addons change your interface, not the game — quest helpers, better bags and maps, unit frames, threat meters. This walks you through it from zero: which client you're on, where to get addons that actually work, where to put them, and how to switch them on. No prior knowledge needed.

First: which client are you playing?

There are two ways into Stonetavern, and they take different addons. The classic Vanilla client is the original game: its addons live in the game's own Interface/AddOns folder. The modern Classic Era client is the up-to-date Blizzard client we bridge onto the realm — its addons live in a separate _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns folder. Use the set that matches your client; an addon built for one will not load on the other.

Where to download addons that work

For the classic Vanilla client, the safe sources are the long-standing community projects: pfUI (interface overhaul, the Vanilla replacement for ElvUI), pfQuest (quest + map helper, the Vanilla equivalent of Questie), AtlasLoot, ShaguTweaks and a threat meter (KTM). Get them from the project's GitHub Releases page or curated portals like legacy-wow.com and vanillawowaddons.com. For the modern Classic Era client, use CurseForge or an addon manager like the CurseForge app, WoWUp or Wago — they install and auto-update for you. Stonetavern also keeps a shelf of the common addons hosted here, sorted by client, so you can take one in a single click instead of hunting for a download. The ones that change too fast to host safely on the modern client, like WeakAuras, Details! and ElvUI, are still best taken from CurseForge with the game-version filter set to your client.

Install it in three steps

1) Download the addon ZIP. 2) Unzip it and copy the addon folder into your AddOns folder — Vanilla: World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns; modern client: World of Warcraft/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns. The folder you copy must contain a .toc file directly inside it; if you see a folder-inside-a-folder (or a name ending in -master), go one level deeper or rename it. 3) Launch the game and, at the character-select screen, click 'AddOns' (bottom-left), tick your addon, and turn on 'Load out of date AddOns' if it looks greyed out.

Where is the WoW AddOns folder?

It sits inside the game folder, not in Documents and not in Program Files unless you installed it there. With the ready-to-play client from this site it is wherever you unzipped the folder. Vanilla client: World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns. Modern Classic Era client: World of Warcraft/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns. On Windows those separators are backslashes; on Mac it is the same path inside the game folder you dragged out of the download. If Interface or AddOns is not there yet, create them by hand and spell them exactly like that, capital I, capital A, capital O. The game reads nothing else. The quickest way to land in the right place: right-click your WoW shortcut, choose Open file location, and you are standing in the game folder.

Updating and removing an addon

The Vanilla client has no update button. To update an addon, download the new version, delete the old folder out of AddOns, and copy the new one in. Replace it, do not merge the two folders, or a stale file survives and you spend an evening on a bug that is not there any more. Your settings live in WTF/Account rather than in the addon folder, so they come through the swap. To remove an addon, delete its folder from AddOns and restart the game. If something misbehaves and you cannot tell which addon it is, untick all of them at character select and switch them back on a few at a time until the problem returns. On the modern Classic Era client an addon manager does all of this for you, updates included.

Questions

Where do I download addons for WoW 1.12.1?
For the Vanilla 1.12.1 client, get them from the community projects: pfUI, pfQuest, AtlasLoot, ShaguTweaks — via their GitHub Releases page or portals like legacy-wow.com and vanillawowaddons.com. Unzip into World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns. Note: Questie is for the modern client; on 1.12.1 use pfQuest instead.
Where do I get addons for the 1.14.2 Classic Era client?
Use CurseForge or an addon manager (CurseForge app, WoWUp, Wago). They install into the _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns folder and keep everything updated for you.
Why won't my addon show up?
Usually a nested folder (the .toc file must sit directly inside the addon folder), a leftover -master/-main in the folder name, the wrong client version, or 'Load out of date AddOns' left unchecked at character select.
Do 1.12 addons work on the 1.14.2 client?
No. Vanilla 1.12 addons and modern Classic Era 1.14.2 addons are not interchangeable — install the set that matches your client.
Where is the WoW AddOns folder?
Inside the game folder: World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns for the Vanilla 1.12.1 client, World of Warcraft/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns for the modern Classic Era 1.14.2 client. With the ready-to-play client it is wherever you unzipped it. If Interface or AddOns is missing, create them by hand with exactly that spelling.
How do I update a WoW addon?
Download the new version, delete the old folder out of AddOns, then copy the new one in — replace it rather than merging, so no stale file is left behind. Settings live in WTF/Account and survive the swap. On the modern client an addon manager updates for you.
Does Stonetavern host addons?
Yes. The addon shelf on this site hosts the common ones for both clients, free, one click each, plus community packs a GM has looked at before release. Addons that change very fast on the modern client are better taken from CurseForge.
