How to pick a WoW private server
Every server calls itself the best one, which makes the word useless on its own. Below are the five questions that actually separate them, and our answers to each — including the two that will send some people somewhere else.
The five questions worth asking
**What are the rates?** x1 means the game as it was written. Higher rates are a different game wearing the same art. Neither is wrong, but a server that hides its rates is telling you something. **What does the shop sell?** This is the question that decides everything downstream. If gold, gear or levels can be bought, the economy and the raid roster are shaped by the shop, not by the players. **Is there one world or many?** Layering and instanced overworlds keep a server looking busy. They also mean the person you grouped with yesterday may not exist in your world today. **Has it wiped?** A realm that resets every few months is a fresh start on a loop. Ask when it opened and what happened to the characters from before. **Who runs it, and are they reachable?** Not a brand. A person who answers when something breaks.
Our answers, including the inconvenient ones
Stonetavern runs x1 rates on unaltered Vanilla. There is no shop: nothing is sold, and contributions cover the server bill and buy nothing else. One shared world, no layering. Elwynn opened in June 2026 and has never been wiped. The inconvenient part: the two factions share chat, groups and dungeons. That is a deliberate change to Vanilla, and it is the one we get argued with about. It exists because a small population split down the middle is two half-empty worlds, and we would rather have one that works than a purity claim that does not. Everything else is unaltered. The second inconvenient part: we are two people and a set of machines, not a company. When something breaks at three in the morning, it is fixed when someone wakes up.
When we are the wrong answer
If you want x5 rates and a fast climb to raid content, this is not it — the climb is the content here. If you want Vanilla+ with new zones, new dungeons and custom items, we deliberately do not have any of that. And if what you actually miss is a full server with thousands of people online, be honest with yourself about that: we are not that, and a page like this should say so rather than let you find out in a week. What is left, if none of that put you off, is the game as it shipped, on a realm that intends to still be here next year.
Questions
- Which is the best WoW private server?
- There is no single answer, because the honest one depends on what you want from it. Decide first whether you want the original rates or a faster game, and whether you will accept a cash shop. Those two answers eliminate most of the list before you compare anything else.
- Is a free private server worse than one that charges?
- Not by itself. What matters is what the money buys. A server funded by donations that buy nothing in-game is in a different position from one selling gear or gold, because the second has a reason to keep the grind long.
- How do I know a server will not wipe?
- You do not, entirely. What you can check is its record: when it opened, whether characters from earlier seasons still exist, and whether anyone has said out loud what happens to them. Elwynn opened in June 2026 and has not been wiped.
- Do you have a cash shop?
- No. Nothing is for sale. Contributions pay for hosting and buy nothing else — no gear, no gold, no levels, no cosmetics.
