How to install addons on Stonetavern
Addons change your interface, not the game — quest helpers, better bags and maps, unit frames, threat meters. This walks you through it from zero: which client you're on, where to get addons that actually work, where to put them, and how to switch them on. No prior knowledge needed.
First: which client are you playing?
There are two ways into Stonetavern, and they take different addons. The classic Vanilla client is the original game: its addons live in the game's own Interface/AddOns folder. The modern Classic Era client is the up-to-date Blizzard client we bridge onto the realm — its addons live in a separate _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns folder. Use the set that matches your client; an addon built for one will not load on the other.
Where to download addons that work
For the classic Vanilla client, the safe sources are the long-standing community projects: pfUI (interface overhaul, the Vanilla replacement for ElvUI), pfQuest (quest + map helper, the Vanilla equivalent of Questie), AtlasLoot, ShaguTweaks and a threat meter (KTM). Get them from the project's GitHub Releases page or curated portals like legacy-wow.com and vanillawowaddons.com. For the modern Classic Era client, use CurseForge or an addon manager like the CurseForge app, WoWUp or Wago — they install and auto-update for you. Stonetavern does not host or bundle addons: you always get them straight from the author, so they stay current and safe.
Install it in three steps
1) Download the addon ZIP. 2) Unzip it and copy the addon folder into your AddOns folder — Vanilla: World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns; modern client: World of Warcraft/_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns. The folder you copy must contain a .toc file directly inside it; if you see a folder-inside-a-folder (or a name ending in -master), go one level deeper or rename it. 3) Launch the game and, at the character-select screen, click 'AddOns' (bottom-left), tick your addon, and turn on 'Load out of date AddOns' if it looks greyed out.
FAQ
- Where do I download addons for WoW 1.12.1?
- For the Vanilla 1.12.1 client, get them from the community projects: pfUI, pfQuest, AtlasLoot, ShaguTweaks — via their GitHub Releases page or portals like legacy-wow.com and vanillawowaddons.com. Unzip into World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns. Note: Questie is for the modern client; on 1.12.1 use pfQuest instead.
- Where do I get addons for the 1.14.2 Classic Era client?
- Use CurseForge or an addon manager (CurseForge app, WoWUp, Wago). They install into the _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns folder and keep everything updated for you.
- Why won't my addon show up?
- Usually a nested folder (the .toc file must sit directly inside the addon folder), a leftover -master/-main in the folder name, the wrong client version, or 'Load out of date AddOns' left unchecked at character select.
- Do 1.12 addons work on the 1.14.2 client?
- No. Vanilla 1.12 addons and modern Classic Era 1.14.2 addons are not interchangeable — install the set that matches your client.
